Here are 7 harsh truths I’ve learned about online business that may sting a little
My first business was/is a subscription box but this is relevant for most niches
- Just getting started is the hardest step for most people – if you’re on the fence, get off it 🏃♂️
So many people dream of starting their own business, but never do. The fear of things going wrong or not knowing what will happen can feel very big and scary. But here’s a secret: the only way you can fail is by not starting at all.
- The starting line is not the finish line – the buildup to launch and then launch is usually an anti-climactic gut punch 👊
Starting isn’t the same as finishing. The thrill of starting a new business can be a lot of fun. But it’s also a bit like lining up at the start of a race. You prepare in advance, but the real work begins after the race starts. The beginning might feel exciting, but the journey is long, and you need to be ready for that.
- Most people are unprepared for the level of work and commitment required to succeed 🗻
It’s more work than most people think. Running your own business isn’t like having a normal job. It needs a lot more time, energy, and dedication than a 9-5. It can be hard, and sometimes, you might feel like giving up. But remember, it’s okay to feel tired. Keep going.
- Your mindset dictates your response to challenges and prospects of your business (get out of your own way) 🧠
Your mindset is important. How you think can shape your business. It’s like steering a ship. If you let fear take the wheel, it will steer you off course. So, stay positive. When things get tough, remind yourself why you started this journey in the first place.
- Your family & friends don’t believe in you at the start 🚫
Even if they say they do. It can feel lonely when your friends and family don’t understand or support your dreams. But don’t worry. It’s your dream, not theirs. Keep believing in yourself, even when others don’t.

When you start to see your hard work pay off, it feels great. Like when you climb a mountain and finally reach the top. There’s nothing better than knowing you’ve done something all on your own. Plus you know it’s something most people can’t do or are too afraid to do.
- You wouldn’t change it for the world – It’s tough but so worth it to stick it out and build your ideal life around your own efforts. 🚀
Despite everything, you wouldn’t want to change a thing. Sure, running a business can be tough. But it’s also very rewarding. The highs can be some of the happiest days of your life.
I often say to people, it doesn’t get easier, you just get better, you get more used to it and (hopefully) the rewards get better
